Dana I. Hodgkin, P.E.

Dana I. Hodgkin, P.E. is the founder and President of Progress Engineering, LLC. A licensed professional engineer with over 30 years of experience in electrical engineering, Dana brings unparalleled expertise to customers’ process control and automation projects, assisting clients with project scope definition, costing, planning, design, component specification, programming, and project commissioning and startup.

Dana completed his Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering at the University of Maine at Orono, Maine, in 1986. Prior to forming Progress Engineering, he gained experience as a project engineer in the pulp and paper manufacturing sector. Later, as engineering staff to several distributors of control and automation equipment, Dana expanded his experience with forest products manufacturers, eventually moving on to head up the engineering department of one of the largest white pine lumber mills in the Northeast. In this capacity, Dana managed the startup of several significant new manufacturing centers at the mill, at the same time utilizing innovative control technologies and in-depth engineering analysis and design to reduce unit manufacturing costs mill-wide.

Under Dana’s leadership, Progress Engineering has expanded its reach to serve not only forest products customers, but also food production, consumer goods, electrical energy distribution, and municipal water and waste water facilities. Dana’s thorough understanding of control systems and manufacturing methods enables him to tailor control systems specific to clients’ facilities. Leading our constantly growing and evolving company to meet clients’ current and future needs has become a mission for Dana as staffing and project magnitude have increased. In addition to assisting customers with designing and implementing new projects, Dana is expert at downtime troubleshooting, resolving previously intractable problems and frequently identifying equipment modifications that improve performance over pre-downtime conditions.

Dana is skilled in utilizing a wide variety of control system equipment to help clients fulfill their automation, control system and energy saving project requirements. He is factory trained in Citect SCADA systems as well as Rockwell Automation and Allen-Bradley control components, and he works frequently with control system components manufactured by other vendors, including Automation Direct; Omron; Modicon; General Electric; Siemens; Delta; and Square D, as well as advanced online production sensing equipment and vision components from ScanMeg, LMI, Dalsa, and Cognex. He is a member of IEEE, and he is a licensed single- and multi-engine commercial pilot.
